Introduction to Pamoja
Pamoja is increasing access to high quality education on a global scale, giving more young people the opportunity to learn. Our courses are approved by the IB, and every day 5,000 Diploma students in 750 schools across 111 countries learn on our global campus.

Pamoja is much more than content; it’s a philosophy about the learner rather than just the outcome. Our learners are digitally literate, creative, global citizens, who ask questions rather than recite answers, and are equipped with the skills for university, work and life.

{Experience Level: Beginner}

Implementing ManageBac in a new school, or a school new to IB. I will share with delegates some of the strategies, successes and possible challenges of introducing ManageBac in a new school setting. I will share expriences gained from introducing ManageBac in a start-up school, while simultaneously building all the other systems needed for a school. {Experience Level: Beginner-Intermediate}

There is a wide diversity in the approach taken by schools to lead and manage the IB Diploma Core. In some smaller schools, just one person may be responsible for CAS, TOK and the Extended Essay, whereas other schools may have an entire team of people, including support staff. This discussion-based workshop will facilitate the sharing of good practice for the delivery of the IB Diploma Core and will consider how ManageBac can best be used to support students during their IB journey.

Session 1: Leading in the Innovation of Education
{Experience Level: ALL}

Khan Lab School was founded to develop new, personalized practices that center around the
student. We create and test learning experiences to share with the world.

In keeping with Sal Khan’s "One World Schoolhouse" philosophy, we provide an extended-year, extended-day, mixed-age program with a project-based learning approach. Students are grouped into collaborative Independence Levels, which are based on executive function skills rather than traditional age restrictions. Our school empowers students to take ownership of their learning.

Located in the heart of Silicon Valley, KLS is associated with Khan Academy, an edtech nonprofit that educates millions of people around the world “for free, for everyone, forever.” Our vision is to design student-centered global learning experiences, and we execute our vision through a Learning Design that encompasses four categories: Approach to Learning, Architecture of Learning, Academic & Character Outcomes, and Art of Teaching.

This session will introduce how we are rethinking school and preparing our students for the
Conceptual Age – by harnessing the power of technology to humanize the classroom.

Session 2: Managing your Data
{Experience Level: Advanced}

The International School of The Hague has a lot of students, lots of teachers, lots of classes, lots of parents and lots of movement. As the person who runs ManageBac in our school, I have the ongoing task of keeping students/classes/teachers/parents up to data and to provide our staff with clear information concerning student progress.
In the MYP and DP the information sought from colleagues is from “how many points are they on?” through to "Who is doing great and who needs support?”, "Which teachers haven't put in their grades and comments yet?”, "How is my subject doing?” and “Are teachers doing what they are supposed to be doing?”

However, I also run a department and teach classes - so what I ask myself is “How can I do this with as little effort as possible?” With all the tasks, grades, reports and expectations - I have developed a collection of digital tools to support ManageBac to get all the information where it needs to be.
The workshop will:
  • Show and share tools in Excel/VBA for processing the ManageBac outputs and providing timely information that immediately collate and summarise the data for staff and leadership teams.
  • Show how the ManageBac API (through Google Apps Script) can be used for managing users and classes without manual imports.
  • Aim to provide general tips on managing ManageBac in your school and will allow the opportunity for participants to discuss and relate to their experiences.

Session 4: What matters more - performance or learning?
{Experience Level: ALL}

Are schools risk takers?

Schools around the world are under pressure to achieve good academic outcomes, accountable to a conservative constituency of parents, educators, governors and systems who can be resistant to change, for the sake of “success”.

This often forces schools and teachers to play it safe and default to traditional teaching practices in pursuit of student outcomes, rather than implement innovative approaches in the interest of student learning.

They remain bound to practices and conditions that have not significantly developed for decades; some might even say centuries. Such conditions don’t permit teachers to create the space or opportunities for students to develop as learners, rather than simply succeed as examination candidates. As long as teaching for success trumps facilitating for learning, the model is inapt.
